Climate Change research :

Chris on Yenisey River

Dr. Guay, VP of Research and Development for Community Fuels, on the Yenisey River in Siberia, Russia.  Dr. Guay's research at that time focused on chemical tracers of Arctic river waters, with a particular interest in the influence of Arctic river discharge on global ocean circulation and climate.  The disproportionately large amount of river discharge received by the Arctic Ocean strongly influences the extent of Arctic sea ice, which is a major component of Earth's overall energy balance.

The submarine USS Archerfish surfaced through the Arctic ice pack north of Alaska.  The boat's commanding officer, Cmdr. Steve Kremer, USN, stands on the deck of the submarine aft of the sail.  Dr. Guay participated in this research cruise, which was part of the 5-year SCICEX program funded by the National Science Foundation and Office of Naval Research to study remote areas of the Arctic.

Roger Revelle

Dr. Guay at sea between New Zealand and Antarctica during the Southern Ocean Iron Fertilization Experiment (SOFEX) research cruise in 2002.  The SOFEX program investigated the dynamics of the plankton community in the Southern Ocean and its effect on the flux of carbon dioxide between the ocean and atmosphere.  This cruise took place onboard the research vessel Roger Revelle, which is named after a former director of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography who was one of the first scientists to suggest that carbon dioxide released to the atmosphere as a result of burning fossil fuels could lead to global climate warming over time.

The Russian icebreaker Vaygach based in Murmansk, Russia.  The Vaygach escorted research vessels through pack ice that was often several meters thick in the passages off the coast of Siberia in 1994-1995.

Dr. Guay deploying a water sampling

Dr. Guay deploying a water sampling device from the Russian research vessel Yakov Smirnitsky in the Kara Sea north of the Siberian coast.  This work was part of a joint Russian-American program in 1994-1995 to study land-ocean interactions in the Eurasian sector of the Arctic.
