American Institute of Chemical Engineers Annual Meeting
November 16 - 21, 2008 in Philadelphia, PA
Victoria Junquera, Process Engineer and EHS Manager for Community Fuels, selected to present
“Sustainable Biodiesel Production. A Tool for Assessing and Improving the Sustainability of a Biodiesel Production Process” at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) annual meeting.
Encinitas, California, June 16, 2008— The American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) is the world’s leading organization for chemical engineering professionals, with more than 40,000 members from 93 countries. The AIChE Annual Meeting will be held from November 16 - 21, 2008 in Philadelphia, PA and is expected to attract more than 4,500 attendees. (www.aiche.org)
Victoria Junquera, Process Engineer and Environmental, Health and Safety Manager for Community Fuels, has been selected to be a featured speaker at the AIChE Annual meeting for a session titled “Sustainable Biodiesel Production. A Tool for Assessing and Improving the Sustainability of a Biodiesel Production Process.” Ms. Junquera will present during the “Topical E: Sustainability” session and her presentation will focus on developing an effective sustainability strategy and implementing the right decision-making tools to improve the sustainability of a renewable fuel while maintaining high productivity and profitability.
Biodiesel is a potential low-carbon and sustainable energy source, but the carbon savings and sustainability of biodiesel fuel depend in large part on how the feedstock and the fuel are produced. State, federal, and international renewable fuel policies are increasingly focused on the carbon balance and sustainability of fuels. Renewable fuels are no longer automatically viewed as a solution to global climate change; only those fuels with negative carbon balance and beneficial environmental attributes are regarded as viable tools for greenhouse gas emission reductions. Community Fuels is developing a methodology to assess and improve the carbon balance and sustainability of biodiesel production processes based on Life Cycle Assessment analysis techniques. Multiple sustainability criteria are taken into account and the resulting accounting metrics can be used to identify and evaluate opportunities for improvement.
